Remember Club Ponytail and Club Manitou? History program July 24 looks back

Club Ponytail Program on July 24, 2014 in Petoskey

Generations of year round and seasonal residents enjoyed entertainment at two legendary northern Michigan establishments — Club Manitou and Club Ponytail.  Upstairs Club Manitou was an upscale dining establishment but underground was "Slim’s — speakeasy where high stakes gambling took place.  It opened in 1929 with ties to Detroit’s infamous Purple Gang. The business closed in the 1950s and in 1962 it became Club Ponytail, a teen dance club where the Beach Boys, Bob Seger, and Roy Orbison performed.

Local historian Rick Wiles has researched these clubs and will be presenting his findings in this interesting program at the Little Traverse Historical Society Museum at Petoskey’s waterfront.

The program begins at 7 p.m. at the museum and is open free of charge to the public.  Seating is limited.

The museum is located at Petoskey’s Bayfront Park (100 Depot Court).  For more information on this program contact Michael Federspiel, Executive Director, at 231-347-2620 or [email protected].
