Headlands – Trail Map & Brochure
Welcome to The Headlands!
The Headlands is an Emmet County property with International Dark Sky Park designation by DarkSky International. The county-owned property hosts more than 200 species of flora and fauna within its 523 wooded acres. Natural features of the site include five miles of hiking trails, over two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and a designated dark sky viewing area for stargazing.
In addition to exceptionally dark skies, the property is also protected in perpetuity by Little Traverse Conservancy with a conservation easement. The Headlands is a birding paradise, as it is directly within the north-south migratory pathway for raptors and other bird species crossing through the narrow Straits of Mackinac. Be on the lookout for many interesting winged inhabitants, especially during the spring and fall during migration.
Visitors may encounter wildlife. Headlands is home to a multitude of birds, as well as deer, coyotes, bobcat, an occasional bear, and a healthy population of mosquitos and black flies. During the winter the site offers hiking, snowshoeing, and groomed cross-country ski trails.
