Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey seeking wreaths for veterans’ holiday effort

Greenwood Cemetery is pleased to announce that is accepting donations for Wreaths Across America for the second year.

Greenwood superintendent Karl Crawford noted, "In 2013 Greenwood placed 740 wreaths (we had 1,368 veterans).  This year we have 1,414 veterans and would like to place a wreath on each grave.  Our veterans include men and women who have participated in wars from the time of the Mexican/American War which began in 1846 to the Iraq War which began in 2003."

This program began in Maine in 1992 with the donation of 5,000 wreaths to honor a few of the veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery.  Since then more than one million wreaths have been placed in cemeteries around the United States.

You may specify the veteran on whose grave you would like the wreath placed, or a veteran of a particular war, or you may let the Cemetery decide for you.

You may also contribute at the Wreaths Across America site, but be advised that you cannot designate a wreath for a specific veteran at their website.  You can only do that through the Greenwood office.

For every two wreaths that are ordered, the cemetery will receive an additional one at no charge.

"This allows us to rapidly increase the number of veterans who will receive a wreath.  If you are going to purchase a wreath for your loved one please consider purchasing an additional wreath to help us get as many ‘free’ wreaths as possible," Crawford said.

A short ceremony will be held on December 13, 2014 at 11:45 AM, followed by the placing of the wreaths in the cemetery.

Sponsorship forms are located on the cemetery’s web site, along with complete details: www.gwood.us

The sponsorship form must be received by the Cemetery no later than November 21, 2014.  You may contribute at the Wreaths Across America website until December 1, 2014.  Please call the Cemetery office at (231) 347-6531 if you have any questions.  Other contact information is on the Order Form.

The wreaths will be delivered to, and are only allowed to be placed in, Greenwood Cemetery.  You will not be able to pick-up your wreath to place at another location.
