If you do not have a concealed weapons permit and want to purchase a firearm (pistol/non-pistol/shotgun), you will need a License to Purchase (RI-010a). You will need to stop by your local law enforcement office to fill out an application and have your criminal history checked to ensure you are eligible to purchase a firearm. You will need to bring your Michigan driver’s license or Michigan issued identification card.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office issues License to Purchase Monday – Friday 8am – 3:30pm.
If you purchased a pistol, it is the seller’s responsibility to return the completed License to Purchase form to their local law enforcement.
If you have a concealed pistol license and want to purchase a firearm, you will not need to stop by your local law enforcement office for a license to purchase. It is the seller’s responsibility to complete and submit the Firearm Sales Record (RI-060) to their local Police Department or Sheriff’s Office within 10 days.
