COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS GARDENS
Unlike standard community service programs, the Community Gardens enables offenders to experience the actual fruits and or vegetables of their labors. Emmet County Community Corrections is one of several Community Corrections Programs in the state that are giving offenders the opportunity to give back to the community, by providing fresh produce.
Select offenders who pose no threat to the community are given the opportunity to work in one of three Community Gardens locations throughout the Harbor Springs/ Petoskey area, where they grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, peas, and other produce. The produce is then distributed to various local charity organizations, such as the Brother Dan’s Food Pantry and the Manna Food Project to provide meals to needy families.
For offenders, spending time in the gardens allows them to serve their court ordered community service obligation outside of normal business hours without interfering with their employment. In addition, the satisfaction of gardening gives offenders a sense of self-worth and accomplishment.
