POSITION SUMMARY:

Manages all aspects of daily operations at Camp Petosega and the Crooked River Lock for the Emmet County Parks and Recreation Department. Enhances the safe experiences for park visitors.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages daily park functions, including customer service and taking reservations, inventory procurement, handling daily financials, ordering materials and supplies, and any other necessary paperwork.
  • Oversees and is involved in the park maintenance, including grounds, buildings, trail maintenance, snow removal, and facility cleanliness including janitorial & custodial, campsites and building mechanicals. Oversees the operation and maintenance of park equipment.
  • Manages the hiring process for seasonal staff members including team member paperwork, training, scheduling, daily work assignments and tasks.
  • Manages Camp Petosega and the Crooked River Lock budget in collaboration with the Director of Parks and Recreation.
  • Collaborates with the Park Programming Coordinator about upcoming park events.
  • Assists visitors with questions and requests, and maintains order and general use within the park.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge and understanding of park rules, regulations polices, and procedures pertaining to the operation and management of County Parks, and recreational areas.  Knowledge of budget and revenue reporting process. Knowledge of the methods, techniques and requirements for the maintenance and upkeep of buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment. Knowledge of outdoor recreational facilities. Knowledge of current recreational needs, interests, trends, and facilities. Knowledge of public relations techniques.  Knowledge of training and supervisory techniques.  Knowledge of employee policies and procedures.  Ability to instruct, direct, and evaluate employees. Ability to schedule work projects. Ability to maintain inventories and records. Ability to prepare reports and recommendations. Ability to evaluate and implement changes in programs. Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information effectively, both orally and in writing.  Ability to work solo with little supervision.  Ability to prioritize and multi-task efficiently.  Ability to use heavy equipment including lawn mowers, tractors, snowmobile, chainsaw, wood chipper, and hand tools is preferred. Must have strong organizational and follow through abilities. Experience in supervising others.  Effective communication skills with co-workers and the general public, including the ability to prepare reports; effective public relations and public speaking skills. Good people oriented communicator, demonstrated problem solving ability and possess creative thinking.  Has the ability to collaborate with others, works as a team. Computer skills, including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentation software sufficient to create/prepare reports and presentations, manage databases, and track projects.  Plumbing, electrical, building and mechanical skills recommended. 


WORKING CONDITIONS

Some jobs require an employee to work under extreme weather conditions and environmental conditions of work site. Some jobs require an employee to work outdoors as well as in an office.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The job duties require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, stand and/or walk for extended periods. The job duties require an employee to lift and/or move heavy objects. The job duties may require an employee to traverse rough terrain.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in park management, park administration, natural resources management, resource management, or park and recreation resources preferred, Associated degree in related course work required; AND have at least 2 years’ experience in a related park environment, prior supervisory experience, general maintenance and functional oversight required. 


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR & First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) within a year of employment.

  Preference is for the successful candidate to live on-site.  Subsidized housing is available.
