POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of complex clerical tasks involved in processing criminal, traffic, civil, and probation cases. Provides information and assistance to law enforcement officers, attorneys, defendants, and Court patrons. Deputy District Court Clerks will be required to cross-train in the civil, criminal, traffic, probation, or other divisions/areas of the Court as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Duties for this position are concentrated in the criminal division with responsibility for criminal files, courtroom scheduling, and court computer entry as primary workload assignment.
- Serves as criminal clerk for all types of clerical and customer service needs related to criminal case files.
- Serves as criminal clerk in court for criminal proceedings, ensuring accurate recording and record keeping of all hearings and scheduling next action dates.
- Serves as cashier for collection of all monies due to the court.
- Operates a computer terminal to enter, update, correct, and access case information; produces computer-generated forms from both the office and courtroom.
- Receives tickets, complaints, filings, and related documents; opens case files, enters case information into the computer, and files case documents.
- Assists with court dockets, maintains accurate court date calendars, court-appointed attorney listings, and other courtroom paperwork as needed.
- Answers the telephone and directs court patrons to the appropriate person for assistance.
- Processes mail and court paperwork, affixing a date stamp to all incoming paperwork.
- Documents case activity and pertinent case information on Court documents and in the computer; maintains accurate case histories on each case.
- Provides information to attorneys, law enforcement officers, defendants, court patrons, and agencies about court policies, procedures, case status, and scheduling of court proceedings.
- Schedules court proceedings and issues notices to the appropriate parties.
- Distributes and recalls search and arrest warrants, conditional bonds, and electronic judgments; maintains records of warrants and conditional bonds issued and recalled.
- Prepares and distributes legal documents, such as jail commitments, judgments of sentence, orders to show cause, orders for pretrial release, default judgments, and delinquency notices.
- Transfers felony cases to Circuit Court and ensures copies of the case are retained in the District Court.
- Prepares and distributes daily reports, registers, and notices generated by the computer system.
- Performs work safely.
BACKUP FUNCTIONS:
- Shares responsibility as criminal clerk in court for all criminal proceedings.
- Serves as backup traffic clerk.
- Reports to Michigan State Police, Central Records Division, criminal history as required by law.
- Receives, receipts, and records fines, costs, bonds, and other monies; issues bond refunds and applies bond monies according to Court orders.
- Attends training and seminars as requested.
- Assists in other areas of the court as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Requires organizational, prioritization, attention to detail, and accurate computer entry skills. Effective communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently and represent the Court positively with Prosecutors, Attorneys, Law Enforcement, and the public.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
CER/CEO training recommended (may obtain after employment).
Must comply with the Model Code of Conduct for Trial Court Employees.
