BUILDING INSPECTOR / PLAN REVIEWER

POSITION: Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer
DEPARTMENT: Planning, Zoning, & Construction Resources Department
SUPERVISOR: Building Official
LOCATION: John R. Watson Community Resource Center – M119/Harbor Springs
RATE OF PAY: $22.98/hour (Two Inspector Registrations)

POSITION SUMMARY:
To help construction progress by reviewing builiding plans and inspection of building construction for code compliance, and to confirm that construction meets the minimum expectations as code compliant and safe.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Administration and enforcement of the building codes in accordance with the rules and regulations governing construction in the State of Michigan
• Performs building inspections for construction requiring building permits
• Completes and sends inspection reports to permit holders.
• Meets with Customers to review current and future projects
• Provide code interpretations
• Educate customers and public on the requirements and necessity for code enforcement
• Corresponds with customers via mail, email, phone calls, etc. and ensures good public relations
• Reviews building plans and specifications submitted in connection with building permit applications.
• Explains the requirements of the local & state building code, and other applicable laws to building contractors and the general public
• Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email, and database software in performing work assignments
• Perform building plan reviews to confirm code compliance with plans submitted
• Completes daily inspection and travel logs for department records
• Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 
• Knowledge of the building code
• Minimum 4 years’ experience in the construction trades
• Understands codes, laws rules, regulations and ordinances governing construction
• Ability to provide code compliant directions
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work well with others as well as the ability to work independently to organize daily work activities
• Ability to work with computers, tablets, digital camera, cell phone, and fax machine
• Ability to work outdoors, climb ladders, access crawlspaces, attics, and traverse construction sites

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 4-years’ experience in the building trade, performing structural related construction …
• OR … licensed as a residential builder under the provisions of 1980 PA 299 MCL 339.101 to 339.2014 and actively engaged in the construction business for not less than 4 years
• OR … possess a current license as an architect or engineer under the provisions of 1980 PA 299 MCL 339.2001 to 339.2014
• OR … worked as a project manager, superintendent, supervisor or foreman actively engaged in general building construction for at least 4 years
• OR … a licensed or registered inspector from other states, Canada or other recognized countries with inspection experience in general building construction and who holds a master or certified building official certificate obtained from the International Code Council (ICC)defined as an inspector by the 2016 PA 407 MCL 339.6001 to 339.6023

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED: 
• Must be registered, or capable of being registered as a building inspector and plan reviewer within 30 days, in accordance with the requirements of PA 407 of 2016, MCL 339.6001 – 339.6023
• Valid Driver’s License
