Do you like photographing the beauty of Michigan? Extend your photography skills into the night by learning the basics of wide-field astrophotography. By learning some basic skills you will discover that the beauty of Mother Nature does not have to end with the setting Sun. To fully participate in the event, you’ll need a DSLR, a basic lens, and a sturdy tripod. A remote shutter release is highly suggested (search Amazon for an intervalometer specific to your camera). If the skies cooperate, we will practice what we learned following the presentation.
Robert is the VP of the Cass Co. Parks and Recreation Department and the individual behind Dr. Lawless International Dark Sky Park. As a delegate and member of the International Dark Sky Association, many examples of Robert’s astrophotography can be found on the park’s Facebook page.
Once again, Emmet County’s International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands challenges the communities around Northern Michigan to turn off their lights so that we can try to get the darkest sky ever recorded at the Headlands.
This challenge will take place in the 10 to 11pm. hour on the night of the new moon when the sky is normally the darkest all month.
Please note that participation is voluntary, so help us get the word out! The ‘Light’s Out Challenge’ is designed to help raise awareness about the effects of artificial light at night on nocturnal habitat, human health, and the way we use our energy resources.
