Explore Michigan, Explore Astronomy: Planetariums, Observatories, and Dark Sky Parks
Jul 27 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Professor Norbert Vance, Dept of Physics & Astronomy, Eastern Michigan University

Michigan is surprisingly rich with observatories, planetariums, and dark sky parks, the nicest, of course, being the Headlands. This talk is a purview of many of these publicly accessible gems found in every corner of Michigan, and a short description of the total solar eclipse of April 2024 will be given. It’s never too early to start planning! A fine desktop reflector telescope is to be given away to one lucky young person as well.

Headlands’ Lights out Challenge
Aug 9 @ 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Once again, Emmet County’s International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands challenges the communities around Northern Michigan to a friendly competition to see who can achieve greatest darkness as we get closer to the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower!

We’re challenging the local communities in a friendly area-wide competition to see who can get darkest in the 10 to 11pm. hour during the Perseid Meteor Shower, Wednesday, August 9th, 2023.

Please note that participation is voluntary, so help us get the word out!

The ‘Light’s Out Challenge’ is designed to help raise awareness about the effects of artificial light at night on nocturnal habitat, human health, and the way we use our energy resources.

Before the challenge starts, we will have a NOMAC presentation on meteor showers beginning at 8:30pm.

Basics of Astrophotography with Robert Parrish
Aug 16 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Do you like photographing the beauty of Michigan? Extend your photography skills into the night by learning the basics of wide-field astrophotography. By learning some basic skills you will discover that the beauty of Mother Nature does not have to end with the setting Sun. To fully participate in the event, you’ll need a DSLR, a basic lens, and a sturdy tripod. A remote shutter release is highly suggested (search Amazon for an intervalometer specific to your camera). If the skies cooperate, we will practice what we learned following the presentation.

Robert is the VP of the Cass Co. Parks and Recreation Department and the individual behind Dr. Lawless International Dark Sky Park. As a delegate and member of the International Dark Sky Association, many examples of Robert’s astrophotography can be found on the park’s Facebook page.
