The Emmet County Board of Commissioners will meet for a regular meeting at 6 p.m. in the commissioners’ board room, across from the treasurer’s office, on the first floor of the County Building at 200 Division Street in downtown Petoskey. The meeting is open to the public. Those attending must enter through the Lake Street doors and be prepared to pass through a metal detector and security check. What are the northern lights and how do we see them? Formally called the aurora borealis, those beautiful reds, greens, and purples in the sky are an atmospheric phenomenon resulting from complex interactions between solar particles and the Earth’s magnetic field. We’ll look at the physics behind the aurora and get a good idea of what to do to see it well.
Each year, Emmet County Parks and Recreation invites the public and campers to a free pancake and sausage breakfast for Father’s Day at Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga. Breakfast will run 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.
There is no charge for the breakfast. Campers are invited to enjoy breakfast at Camp Petosega’s Rec Hall.

At the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, we frequently are asked what the best telescope for beginners is. Our answer is a good pair of binoculars. This presentation will discuss various types of binoculars and what accessories you should buy to enhance their use for astronomy. We will also discuss techniques for finding your way around the night sky.
The next few years could bring the best northern lights viewing to Michigan in 20 years! Ross Ellet will explain his strategies for successfully chasing the Aurora in recent years and how to photograph them with a camera and smart phone. Entry is free!
