Emmet County Parks & Recreation is hosting a Snowshoe & Hike at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park on Sunday, Jan. 17, starting at noon. Walk with a group or venture out on your own anytime. (A copy of the Headlands’ trail map is online here.) Social distancing and masks will be required for group walks. Dress appropriately for cold weather. Access to the trails is available from the parking area just inside the Headlands’ park entrance. Follow the event on the Headlands Facebook page for any changes.

Emmet County Parks & Recreation is hosting a Snowshoe or Hike at Camp Petosega on Sunday, Jan. 24, starting at 1 p.m. Walk with a group or venture out on your own anytime. Those wishing to walk with the group should meet at 1 p.m. in the beachfront parking (go straight past the registration office, towards the shoreline). Cruise-in & Car Show at County Fairgrounds

Emmet County Parks and Recreation is hosting a car show at the Emmet County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 19, from 4-8 p.m. A variety of makes and models will fill the fairgrounds for automobile enthusiasts to appreciate. Admission to the event is free. Park staff is still accepting participants for the event. Entry fee is $5 per vehicle. Those interested in participating can download registration documents here. Summer Craft Show at County Fairgrounds

Emmet County Parks and Recreation is hosting a summer craft show at the Emmet County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local and guest vendors will be selling a variety of items including jewelry, clothes, handmade gifts, cards, and more. Admission to the event is free. Park staff is still accepting vendors for the event. Cost is $50 for a 10×10 space with one table and chairs provided to the first 30 vendors who sign up. Meet-n-Greet with author Tyler Benson at McGulpin Point

Emmet County Parks and Recreation is hosting a free Meet-and-Greet event at McGulpin Point Lighthouse on Saturday, August 28, from noon to 2 p.m., with author of the children’s book series The Adventures of Onyx. Tyler Benson, who lives with his family in St. Ignace, has served in the United States Coast Guard for over 18 years. He began writing short stories about his search and rescue adventures in the Coast Guard to educate his young children about what he does when he goes on duty for 48 hours at a time. He wanted them to learn the importance of service to their country and helping those in need. To help them better understand his job, Tyler wrote the stories featuring his station’s morale dog, Onyx. These stories soon evolved into a dream — to publish a book series that would serve as a tribute and a way to bring recognition to all who serve or have served in the United States Coast Guard. Holiday Open House at McGulpin Point Lighthouse

Visit with Santa

Space, Rocks and Ice: Connecting Astronomy, Antarctica and Northern Michigan

In this talk, Polar geologist Jamey Stutz will draw connections between the glacial landscape of Northern Michigan and the massive Antarctic Ice Sheet and show how the world’s largest chunk of ice not only regulates global sea level but sets the stage for Astronomers to look, listen and feel into deep space. This talk is family-friendly, and Antarctic rock samples and polar gear will be on display for all.
