James Webb Space Telescope has been fully operational for about a year now. Launched on Christmas Day, 2021, it is the first of the next generation of space telescopes. This presentation by NOMAC will explore the technology of this new instrument and the significant discoveries it has made to date.

We will be discussing a brief history of comets, how best to observe them, and equipment needed. What are comets, where do they come from, and how have they effected the Earth and other planets in the solar system will also be discussed? This presentation will also include an active demonstration of comet making. Yes, a comet will be made before the eye of all who participate!

What are the northern lights and how do we see them? Formally called the aurora borealis, those beautiful reds, greens, and purples in the sky are an atmospheric phenomenon resulting from complex interactions between solar particles and the Earth’s magnetic field. We’ll look at the physics behind the aurora and get a good idea of what to do to see it well.
Each year, Emmet County Parks and Recreation invites the public and campers to a free pancake and sausage breakfast for Father’s Day at Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga. Breakfast will run 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.
There is no charge for the breakfast. Campers are invited to enjoy breakfast at Camp Petosega’s Rec Hall.

At the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, we frequently are asked what the best telescope for beginners is. Our answer is a good pair of binoculars. This presentation will discuss various types of binoculars and what accessories you should buy to enhance their use for astronomy. We will also discuss techniques for finding your way around the night sky.

This will take place at Camp Petosega in Alanson, Michigan on the cross country trail. Registration fee is $15 and $25 for signing up on the day of the event. This presentation is all about the total solar eclipse that will cross over the heart of the United States on April 8, 2024. What causes a solar eclipse, how to observe it safely, and where to observe “TOTALITY” will be some of the many topics that are presented. Emmet County Parks and Recreation is hosting a car show at the Emmet County Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 23, from 10 AM to 1 PM. Gates open at 9 AM the day of the event for vehicle registration. You can preregister or register same day. A variety of makes and models will fill the fairgrounds for automobile enthusiasts to appreciate at this Cruise-in Car Show! Admission to the event is free for the general public. Participants will be required to pay a $15 fee per vehicle entered. Trophies will be awarded with door prizes given out throughout the day.
