Emmet County Sheriff’s Office will hold snowmobile safety classes again in 2020. The free six-hour course is taught by a certified snowmobile safety instructor and is followed by an exam. After successful completion of the exam, the student is issued a Snowmobile Safety Certificate.
The first opportunity to take the snowmobile safety course will be Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Richard Zink Road Patrol Building, 3460 Harbor-Petoskey Road, Harbor Springs. The course will also be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Eppler Road EMS station, located at 1201 Eppler Road, Petoskey. Both classes run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Those interested in taking the free course must be at least 12 years of age. Adults are welcome.
Please bring a pencil and your own lunch. Class size is limited to 25 students. Pre-registration is required. Please call (231) 439-8900, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. to sign up for the class. The snowmobile safety class is also available online at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website.
Emmet County Parks and Recreation is partnering with volunteers from Friends of Oden Fish Hatchery Visitor Center to host our annual free Ice Fishing Day for Kids at Camp Pet-o-se-ga located in Alanson. The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. and coincides with the Michigan Department of National Resources’s free fishing weekend. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade along with their parents or guardians are welcome to join us for an afternoon of ice fishing and fun.
We supply the fishing gear and bait while parents supply the warmly dressed kids. Please note that parents must remain with their children throughout the event. Volunteers from Friends of the Oden Fish Hatchery Visitor Center will be helping kids with baiting and fishing.
Participants will be able to get warmed up in the campground Rec Hall with free hot dogs, snacks and hot cocoa. If the outside temperature (including wind chill factor) is below zero degrees, the event will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16.
