2019-06-05: Sheriff Press Release

At 4:55 am, today June 5, 2019 the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a death investigation on I-75 near the Emmet/Cheboygan County line by mile marker 337. The Sheriff’s Office is in the process of confirming the identity and notifying the next of kin. The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office would like anyone having seen a white male, approximately 35 years old walking in the area of M-108 and I-75 or anyone who traveled north bound on I-75 between 1 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. today to contact the Sheriff’s Office. The death remains under investigation. I-75 has been re-opened for traffic.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Mackinaw City Police Department, Mackinaw City Fire Department, Emmet County Road Commission, Emmet County EMS and Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. 

UPDATE:  The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office investigation has revealed evidence of the incident being a possible suicide.  The investigation also shows the victim was struck by a vehicle while on I-75, possibly a tractor-trailer.  The Sheriff’s Office has not identified the vehicle involved and seeks any information leading to identity of the driver.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting witness interviews, Accident Reconstruction, and working with the Emmet County Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.   The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate all possibilities and urges anyone with information to come forward by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 231-439-8900.
