2018-07-26: Sheriff Press Release

On Wednesday July 25, 2018, at approximately 15:38 the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 2 male subjects in distress on Crooked Lake. According to Sheriff Pete Wallin, two males and two females were aboard a pontoon boat on Crooked Lake when they anchored the vessel to swim. All subjects were using inner tube type floats with no life jackets. Subjects began to notice they were being separated from the boat. One of the males dismounted his tube and began having problems swimming. 3 of the 4 subjects were successfully able to re-board the boat.

Subjects unsuccessfully attempted to rescue the other male subject. The other 3 occupants of the vessel were uninjured.

Search and rescue efforts were immediately initiated and continued until dark. The search was resumed at 0630 today, Thursday July 26, 2018 with additional resources from mutual aid partners. The depth is 40 plus feet at the search location.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
