The Emmet County Board of Commissioners elected its Chair and Vice Chair for the year ahead, during an Organizational Meeting Jan. 3.
Incumbent Charlie MacInnis, District 3, will be the Board Chairman, while Jonathan Scheel, District 5, will serve as Vice Chair.
“I am honored and humbled to be given this responsibility,” said MacInnis. “It is important to me and I intend to serve in a way that I hope the residents will find to be open, honest and forthright.”
Scheel, serving his first term on the Board, said: “I’m really happy that the Board chose me as Vice Chair. I am impressed with our first meeting and the changes that are going to bring the public closer to this Board and give them the information they deserve to have.”
In addition to appointing leadership roles, the Board made changes to its rules and meeting schedule, opting to eliminate standing committees such as Finance, Building and Grounds, Personnel and others. Instead, the board will evaluate staff recommendations and make decisions as a “committee of the whole.”
The Board set meeting dates for the year for its regular monthly voting session; those dates are 6 p.m.: Jan. 12; Feb. 16; March 16; April 13; May 11; June 15; July 13; Aug. 17; Sept. 14; Oct. 12; Nov. 9; Dec. 14
In addition to the regular meeting, the Board set monthly “Work Sessions” at 6 p.m. on the Monday prior to the regular Thursday Board meetings. These sessions are intended to give the Board time to discuss important topics they may be facing, MacInnis explained during the Jan. 3 meeting. These sessions will be open to the public.
Upcoming important dates:
Jan. 9: 6 p.m. Work Session
Jan. 11: 2 to 5 p.m. Goal-setting workshop facilitated by MSU Extension.
Jan. 12: 6 p.m. January Board of Commissioners meeting
All meetings will take place in the Commissioners’ Room of the County Building, 200 Division St., downtown Petoskey.
