Smart Commute Emmet: June 2-6, 2014
“Smart Commute Week is designed to get people to consider alternative ways to get to work, with a little friendly competition thrown in,” said Emily Meyerson, Smart Commute committee chairperson. “Smart Commute Week is organized each year by more than 20 private and community organizations, and administration by the Top of Michigan Trails Council. It is a true community collaboration to raise awareness about commuting habits and its impact on health and the environment.”

Smart Commute Emmet encourages you to get fit, be green and save money duringEmmet County’s 5th Annual Smart Commute Week on June 2–June 6, 2014. Smart Commute promotes the use of alternative modes of transportation to get to work or school.
The Smart Commute Commuter Cup Challenge will again be the centerpiece event and registration is now open. Commuter Cup Challenge is a friendly competition between local businesses and organizations that compete to see who can encourage the highest percentage of employees to walk, bicycle, carpool or use public transportation to get to work. Registered participants get free breakfasts Monday June 3rd through Thursday June 6th at various locations around the bay, happy hour event and entry to a great prize drawing for a bike, walking poles, bike helmet and various gift certificates from our sponsors.
If you live too far to bike or walk, use one of our convenient “smart lots” to park and then ride or walk the rest of the way. Live farther away? Many public carpool lots are available. Go to our web site -- www.trailscouncil.org -- for a map of smart lot and carpool lot locations.
Want to try public transportation? Well now is the time. On Wednesday, June 5, there will be a Try Transit Day with various routes available, information available on our website
Ready to bike commute but need to get your bike ready? Go to the Free Bike Maintenance Class on Tuesday, May 14th from 6:30 to 8:00 at North Country Cycle Sport in downtown Petoskey.
Never smart commuted before and want to learn the ins and outs of bike or walk commuting? Want to learn more about the health and environmental benefits? Learn about carpool lots and public transportation options? Come to the Free Smart Commute Open House on Thursday, May 30th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Latitude 45 in Petoskey. The open house will be your last chance to sign up for the Commuter Cup Challenge.

Commuter Cup Challenge
Feel like being smart even before you get to work?
Join the 2014 Smart Commute Emmet Commuter Cup Challenge! It is a friendly competition to encourage co-workers and friends to bike, walk, carpool or use public transit to get to work.
How does Commuter Cup Challenge Work?
Participants track their preferred method of smart commuting Monday through Thursday June 2nd through 6th. The COVETED CUP goes to the team with the highest percentage of employees commuting each day within their division, based on the overall number of employees who were at work. Workplace divisions are mini (2-5), small (6-12), medium (13-25) and large (26+) and NEW THIS YEAR: A Non-workplace division for neighborhood groups, school classes, service clubs, senior centers, coffee clubs, etc.).

No problem, sign up as an individual and be eligible for breakfasts and prizes.
