Easy Organizing Tip for a Safer, Greener Home
How can something that’s easier than returning cans for deposit simultaneously organize your home and make it safer and more environmentally friendly? By letting you get rid of unwanted household chemicals. The Emmet County Household Chemical Drop-off (HCD) program does just that. The service is free of charge to Emmet County households and the first 2015 HCD is coming up on May 16.
Most households can free up a whole shelf–or more–just by disposing of unwanted paints. Oil-based paints and stains, wood-preservative finishes, polyurethane, varnish, shellac, and latex paints manufactured before 1980 are all accepted by the Household Chemical Drop-off program. Modern latex paints are not part of the free HCD, but are accepted for recycling for $1 per gallon can during regular hours at the Drop-off Center on Pleasantview Road from April 1-November 1 annually.
Using a Household Chemical Drop-off Day is as simple as gathering up unwanted household chemicals, calling the DPW for an appointment (348-0660) and then dropping off your chemicals. Appointments are required in order to keep things running safely and smoothly on collection day.
By dropping-off pesticides, harsh cleaners and solvents, mercury thermometers and thermostats and the like you’ll also be making your home safer and “greener.” Hazardous chemicals stored in the home always present a risk of poisoning (especially if you have children or pets) and release into the environment in case of a spill or fire.
So clean up, green up, and free up storage space all at once! Call 348-0640 and make a Household Chemical Drop-off appointment. Emmet County will also be holding HCDs on Saturdays July 25 and September 26, 2015.
Emmet County’s program is free for Emmet County households. Businesses and out-of-county households can use the program for a fee. Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties also have HCD programs which are free for their residents. In Charlevoix County call 582-6193. In Cheboygan County call 627-7051.
