The Northern Lights photographs below were taken by Gary Appold, Emmet County IT Director, on the night of Aug. 5-6, 2011, above the Headlands and McGulpin Point Lighthouse, two northern county-owned park properties.
The Dark Sky photos from the Headlands in the second album were taken at various times and events by Robert de Jonge, a professional photographer from Petoskey.

On the night of April 21-22, Emmet County IT Director Gary Appold recorded time lapse photographs of the Lyrid Meteor Shower in the dark sky over the Headlands International Dark Sky Park. The video is posted on YouTube. To watch it, click on the video below!

Using a long exposure and a fish-eye lens, Emmet County IT Director Gary Appold captured Northern Lights glow and a meteor on the night of April 17 at his home in Carp Lake, which is a short distance from the International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands.
Day into night ...
The Harvest Moon event at the Headlands on Sept. 12, 2011, took place on a warm, clear evening, offering sky-gazers panoramic views of the sunset and the moon rise over the Northern Emmet County property.
