How to Obtain a Marriage License in Emmet County
AFFIDAVIT (Application) FOR LICENSE
Michigan Residents
- Fill out affidavit (application) for the marriage license:
- One or both parties must reside in Emmet County.
- Both parties must appear with driver's license and birth certificate.
- A fee of $20.00 is required at time of application.
Out of State Residents
- Fill out affidavit (application) for the marriage license:
- May apply only if marriage will take in Emmet County.
- Both parties must appear with driver's license and birth certificate.
- A fee of $30.00 is required at time of application.
MARRIAGE LICENSE / CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE
Marriage License
- There is a three day waiting period after the affidavit is completed.
- One or both of the parties must pick up the license and review it for accuracy.
- The marriage license is valid for thirty days after date of issue.
Certificate of Marriage
- Two witnesses are required. Michigan law requires that witnesses must be at least 18 years of age.
- Both copies of the Certificate must be completed, printed in black ink or typewritten, by an officiant authorized by the State of Michigan to perform marriages.
- Both the bride and groom must sign the license using their married names.
- The original Certificate must be returned to the County Clerk's office within ten days of the ceremony. The Duplicate copy may be retained by one of the parties joined in marriage.
