Emmet County Clerk Gail Martin (left) is pictured with staff at the WRC Safe Home and the numerous items donated from county staff.

Emmet County employees recently held an in-office collection drive, filling seven large recycling totes full of items to help fulfill the "needs list" of the Petoskey Women's Resource Center's Safe Home.

The effort was a project of the county's WeCare Committee, headed up by Clerk Gail Martin, Treasurer Marilyn May and Register of Deeds Michele Stine. For one week, staff in each department brought in items to donate, ranging from personal care and cleaning products to cash donations.

Clerk Gail Martin said the outpouring of staff donations was overwhelming. "It really brought everyone together for a great cause," Martin said.

The WRC Safe Home helps nearly 200 women and children each year escape domestic violence by providing a place of shelter, meals and more. For more information, visit www.wrcnm.org.

Emmet County employees give back to the community with 'WeCare'

For the last 15 years, Emmet County employees have given back to the community through a silent auction and bake sale, WeCare.

This year’s event was held Thursday, Nov. 4 and raised $650.

“This is an opportunity for our staff to help the community. We know there are many, many families in need in Emmet County - especially at the holidays,” said County Clerk Gail Martin, WeCare committee member. “It’s wonderful that we have county employees who have contributed not only goods for this function, but their time as well.”

In the days leading up to the WeCare event, county employees bring in items for a silent auction - books, movies, candles, household items, etc. - and baked goods to sell. From 10 a.m. until noon, staff bids on the donated items; monetary donations are also welcomed. Some employees also opt for regular payroll deductions to contribute to WeCare.

Each year, more than $500 has been raised through the WeCare auction, Martin said.
The money has been donated to charitable organizations such as the Manna Food Project, Women’s Resource Center and the Salvation Army, as well as gift cards to families in need.

Clerk Gail Martin, Treasurer Marilyn May and Register of Deeds Michele Stine coordinate the effort, and county staff members are encouraged to take part by bidding on donated auction items and purchasing baked goods made by their colleagues.
