\nFREE AIRPL ANE RIDES FOR KIDS THIS SATURDAY
\nFree airplane rides for kids will be offered this Saturday\, August 13\, at the Pellston Regional Airport from 9 a.m. until noon. The free rides are bei ng offered by the Harbor Springs chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Asso ciation for children ages 8 to 17. Local licensed pilots who are members of the chapter are donating their services and their airplanes for this ev ent.
\nParents must accompany their chi ldren to the airport to register for the free flights. After their flight\ , each young person will receive an EAA pilot logbook and a certificate si gned by the pilot.
\nThe airport entranc e is located on US-31 just north of the Village of Pellston. The Young Ea gles program will be conducted at the small general aviation terminal loca ted south of the much larger main terminal used for scheduled airline serv ice.
\nIf unsafe weather conditions ca use the event to be cancelled\, it will not be rescheduled.
\nThe free rides are part of a nationwide program call ed “Young Eagles” launched 30 years ago to introduce kids to aviation and inspire them to think about the many possibilities associated with flight. The EAA recently recognized the Harbor Springs chapter for participatin g in the Young Eagles program continuously since its start in 1992.
\nSince the p rogram’s inception\, more than 2 million young people nationwide have enjo yed a free introductory Young Eagles flight. The flights are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.

\nEmmet County Parks and Recreation is partnering with volunteers from Friends of Oden Fish Hatchery Visitor Center to host our annual free Ice Fishing Day for Kids at Camp Pet-o-se-ga located in Alanson. The even t takes place Saturday\, Feb. 18\, from noon to 4 PM and coincides with th e Michigan Department of National Resource’s free fishing weekend. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade\, along with their parents or guardians are welcome to join us for an afternoon of ice fishing and fun.
\nW e supply the fishing gear and bait while parents supply the warmly dressed kids. Please note that parents must remain with their children throughout the event. Volunteers from Friends of the Oden Fish Hatchery Visitor Cent er will be helping kids with baiting and fishing.
\nParticipants wil l be able to get warmed up in the campground Rec Hall with free hot dogs\, snacks and hot cocoa. If the outside temperature (including wind chill fa ctor) is below zero degrees\, the event will be held on Sunday\, Feb. 19.< /p>\n

What are the northern lights and how do we see them? Formally c alled the aurora borealis\, those beautiful reds\, greens\, and purples in the sky are an atmospheric phenomenon resulting from complex interactions between solar particles and the Earth’s magnetic field. We’ll look at the physics behind the aurora and get a good idea of what to do to see it wel l.
\n\nEach year\, Emmet County Parks and Recreation invites the publi c and campers to a free pancake and sausage breakfast for Father’s Day at Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga. This will be a very active presentation using liquid nitrogen t o demonstrate how cold outer space is. The presentation will include a ba sic description of how the Sun’s distance affects the temperatures of each planet and the impact this has on humans’ ability to study the planets wi th space probes will be examined.
\n\nDo you like photographing the beauty of Michigan? Extend your p hotography skills into the night by learning the basics of wide-field astr ophotography. By learning some basic skills you will discover that the bea uty of Mother Nature does not have to end with the setting Sun. To fully p articipate in the event\, you’ll need a DSLR\, a basic lens\, and a sturdy tripod. A remote shutter release is highly suggested (search Amazon for a n intervalometer specific to your camera). If the skies cooperate\, we wil l practice what we learned following the presentation.
\nRobert is t he VP of the Cass Co. Parks and Recreation Department and the individual b ehind Dr. Lawless International Dark Sky Park. As a delegate and member of the International Dark Sky Association\, many examples of Robert’s astrop hotography can be found on the park’s Facebook page.
\n\nOnce again\, Emmet County’s International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands challenges the communities around Northern Michigan to turn off their lights so that we can try to get the darkest sky ever recorded at th e Headlands.
\nThis challenge will take place in the 10 to 11pm. hou r on the night of the new moon when the sky is normally the darkest all mo nth.
\nPlease note that participation is voluntary\, so help us get the word out! The ‘Light’s Out Challenge’ is designed to help raise awaren ess about the effects of artificial light at night on nocturnal habitat\, human health\, and the way we use our energy resources.

\nGood Hart Artist Residency\, the Headlands International Dark S ky Park\, and Little Traverse Conservancy offer a chance to sharpen the se nses with Good Hart Artist Residency Composer-inResidence Susan Mayo. Mayo is a soundscape artist\, composer\, and cellist. Participants will embark on a guided hike beginning at sunset\, led by Susan Mayo and assisted by Little Traverse Conservancy guides. Participants will silently observe the night music of nature\, allowing the dark skies to help them tune in deep ly with their ears and hear the magic of sounds that are easily missed if you aren’t paying close attention. Later\, participants will gather in the Waterfront Event Center to hear works guided by the muse of nature sounds and composed and played by Susan Mayo.

The OSIRIS-REx Mission- Headlands International Dark Sky Park – 5/22/24 – 7pm – 8pm – Join us at the Waterfront Event Center for a presen tation on OSIRIS-REx\, the first U.S. mission to collect a sample from an asteroid. It returned to Earth on Sept. 24\, 2023\, to drop off material f rom asteroid Bennu. The spacecraft didn’t land but has continued on a new mission\, OSIRIS-APEX\, to explore asteroid Apophis. Meanwhile\, scientist s are analyzing the Bennu sample OSIRIS-REx dropped into the Utah desert f or clues to whether asteroids colliding with Earth billions of years ago b rought water and other key ingredients for life here.

Seeing the northern lights is a top bucket list item across the world. While the aurora is always present somewhere across the planet\, k nowing when and where to find the mysterious lights is challenging. A quic k google search on the topic can leave you in a state of confusion. Ross E llet is a Meteorologist for the ABC station in Toledo\, OH. He is also an avid photographer that chases the monsoon storms in Arizona each year\, an d chases the aurora in Michigan to Alaska. He will share his experiences a nd photographs\, but more importantly\, he will break down the science of the aurora and explain how to make a plan to see the northern lights and m ake that dream a reality!

Cruise-In Car Show – Emmet County Fairgrounds – 7/21/24 – 10am – 1pm – Emmet County Parks and Recreation is hosting a car show at the Emm et County Fairgrounds on Sunday\, July 21\, from 10 AM to 1 PM. Gates open at 9 AM the day of the event for vehicle registration. There is no pre-re gistration. Admission to the event is free for the general public. Partici pants will be required to pay a $15 fee per vehicle entered. Trophies will be awarded with door prizes given out throughout the day. Mysteries of the Southern Skies with Norbert Vance – Headlands International Dark Sky Park – 7/31/24 – 8pm – 9pm – Peoples of the souther n hemisphere see the Southern Cross\, the Sun’s nearest neighboring star\, Alpha Centauri\, the supposed destination of the 60’s fictional Robinson family in “Lost in Space” and grandeur that is the center of our Milky Way galaxy\, but they can never see the Little Dipper nor North Star. The Big Dipper is alien to them. We will extend our view below the southern hori zon visible from the Headlands to see what treasures we are missing\, and also the amazing visions they cannot see from our northerly perch that we take for granted.

Headlands Light’s Out Challenge –Headlands International Dark S ky Park – 8/4/24 – 10pm – 11pm – Once again\, Emmet County’s Headlands Int ernational Dark Sky Park challenges the communities around Northern Michig an to turn off their lights so that we can try to get the darkest sky ever recorded at the Headlands. This challenge will take place in the 10 to 11 pm hour on the night of the new moon when the sky is normally the darkest all month. Please note that participation is voluntary\, so help us get th e word out! The ‘Light’s Out Challenge’ is designed to help raise awarenes s about the effects of artificial light at night on nocturnal habitat\, hu man health\, and the way we use our energy resources.

How Cold is Outer Space?
